Triple the efficiency thanks to optical 3D measuring system
Why did SABIC choose the GOM’s optical 3D measuring system?
In 2007, SABIC plastics realized the need for optical measuring technology. The polymer producer and marketer sought a solution to provide more flexibility, improve accuracy, and save time: the answer lay with GOM.
SABIC was looking for a system that provided fast, superior validation of different designs in various environmental conditions. The GOM systems fulfilled these requirements perfectly. Another advantage was the fact that many of SABIC’s customers were already working with GOM systems. This meant instantly comparable data results and made GOM the first choice.
Three GOM systems evaluate part performance
Tim van Erp, team leader of Application Testing at SABIC, says that it quickly proved the right decision. “Thanks to GOM systems, SABIC was able to take the next steps in advanced dimensional performance evaluations. GOM’s various measuring options help to rapidly solve many measuring challenges and analyses.”
The company began by using the optical photogrammetry system TRITOP for static deformation analysis of a new plastic tailgate and later expanded with ARAMIS for localized deformation and strain measurements during loading conditions on complex molded parts. By replacing a CMM with GOM’s ATOS Triple Scan system for 3D scanning, SABIC increased efficiencies even further. ATOS allows full-field measurements; the corresponding GOM software enables a 3D analysis of surfaces as well as a 2D analysis of sections or points, visualizing any issues, without any unchecked areas. ATOS showed this benefit when measuring the wear of gear wheels after life-cycle tests.
“For us, the value of GOM systems is beyond dispute and we see the use of their measuring systems as a must for future projects. The optical measurements are an integral part of our approach in part performance evaluation.” Tim van Erp, team leader of Application Testing at SABIC.
